Coach's Corner November 27, 2011 Jeremy Digiovanni, Head Girls' Basketball Coach
The eve of a season opening game is always filled with excitement, anticipation, and a good case of nerves. Each team opens the season with optimism and hopes of playing for championships in March. While not everyone will realize these dreams, the energy, discipline, thought, and teamwork that go into the pursuit of these goals is what makes the lasting memories that each team member will carry with them beyond this season. The basketball season is a marathon that spans parts of three different Minnesota weather seasons. Those who choose to undertake this challenge must not only be physically up to the rigors of daily practices and games but also must be mentally strong enough to handle all of the peaks and valleys that will be encountered along the way. For those who are committed to putting forth their best efforts combined with a positive attitude while celebrating positives and standing up to adversity on this journey, there will be a great sense of satisfaction at the end of the road. This may come in several forms such as team championships, individual academic or athletic honors, or the fulfillment of completing a job to the best of one’s ability and knowing that in itself is an accomplishment that can be carried throughout life beyond basketball.
The girls who have made this commitment to the Rogers Royals basketball program have worked hard through the offseason and first two weeks of practice to prepare themselves for the new season which will be highlighted with several new looks. First, the Royals will have a lineup with several players new to varsity basketball. The players have competed with each other to earn roles that were opened up when three starters graduated a year ago. Rogers has added several new opponents to the schedule this year through games with Bemidji, Mounds View, Simley, and St. Cloud Tech. The Royals also move into a new class and new section which will provide for new and challenging matchups in the playoffs which may include familiar foes from St. Michael-Albertville, Buffalo, and Elk River as well as fresh faces from Brainerd and Moorhead. While there will be many changes, the game of basketball and the values that have become a strong part of the Rogers tradition remain the same. The Royals will look to continue on the path of success on and off the court that has become a trademark of our program in a relatively short period of time.
The coaches and players of the Royals wish to invite all of you to come out and support the team at home or on the road throughout the season. It is through fan cheering and enthusiasm that our players bring out their best efforts. Make the gym a part of your winter entertainment activities as the Royals look forward to another exciting season of basketball!
